Vocal Mixing Tips Pros Hide

June 01, 20252 min read

In 2025, vocal quality can make or break your track — whether you’re dropping a single on Spotify, mixing vocals for a TikTok hit, or doing VO for YouTube. The good news? You don’t need $10,000 of gear or a Grammy to get that polished sound. You just need the right techniques.

Here are 4 vocal mixing tips the pros use every day (but rarely talk about):

🔹 1. The Double De-esser Trick (Without Killing the Air)

De-essing is essential — but one overly aggressive de-esser can make your vocals sound dull and lisped.

Pro tip: Use two de-essers instead:

  • The first with light settings around 5–7kHz

  • The second higher, around 10kHz, catching harsh "T" and "F" sounds

✅ Why it works: Splitting the load preserves your air and clarity, while still taming sibilance.

🔹 2. Serial Compression = Smoother Vocals

One compressor often can’t do it all. That’s where serial compression comes in — using multiple compressors in a row, each doing a little work.

Example chain:

  • First compressor: Fast attack, 2–3 dB of reduction (tame peaks)

  • Second compressor: Slower attack, for body and tone shaping

✅ Why it works: This mimics analog vocal chains and keeps dynamics under control without sounding squashed.

🔹 3. EQ the Reverb Send (Not Just the Vocal)

Reverb can muddy up your mix fast, especially with vocals. Instead of EQ’ing the vocal dry signal more, try this:

EQ the actual reverb send — cut lows and sometimes highs depending on the vibe.

Pro chain:
Vocal → Send to Reverb Bus → EQ (High-pass @ 200Hz, Low-pass @ 8kHz)

✅ Why it works: This gives your reverb a tailored tone and keeps it out of the way of your lead.

🔹 4. Automate the Final 5%

This is what separates amateurs from pros: they automate tiny vocal details.

Automate:

  • Vocal volume rides on quiet phrases

  • Reverb send on emotional words (“fall,” “love,” etc.)

  • Delay throws at the end of lines

✅ Why it works: These small movements create emotion, and listeners feel it — even if they don’t consciously notice it.
